Midi Bistro

Midi Bistro
168 McCaul St
Toronto, ON

I wanted to go here for Winterlicious 2011, but it was booked full when the group wanted to go, so I was determined to go here this time (it’s with a different group of friends). The place does French cuisine, and I could see why it was booked so quickly. It’s a really small room on McCaul st.

APPETIZERS:

Escargots! I had this one, and it pretty much just tasted like what escargots taste like, but in a sort of sauce. I don’t remember the sauce standing out that much, but it was tasty enough from my memory.

Salad of some sort.

Soup — don’t really know what kind :P

MAIN DISHES:

Duck Leg! The whole reason I wanted to go here was to try the duck leg :D . It was pretty tasty, and I really liked it with the blueberry sauce that it came with. I haven’t had a lot of meat with sweet sauces, so it was pretty interesting for me :D .

Salmon.

My friend has an obsession with shepherd’s pie.

DESSERT:

Creme Brulee. I got this and I remember liking it!

Raspberry Gelato, I think?

I have absolutely no clue what this is! I think it’s some kind of pastry with chocolate on it.

Or this, for that matter. I’m so helpful. Googled it, and it’s poached pear :D .

My parents, my boyfriend and I went downtown to see Sound of Music, and decided to try out one of the Winterlicious menus around the area. :) For those who don’t know what Winterlicious is, in Toronto every year in both the winter and the summer (Summerlicious), restaurants can offer a three-course meal, usually around $20 or so, depending on whether it’s dinner or lunch. This year, they extended it for about a week or so, so it coincided with our reading week ^^. The meal portions are usually smaller than what you would usually get at the restaurant (obviously). The choices are usually limited to around 3-4 different choices for each course.

First off, appetizers!

I had escargots. For some reason, it reminded me of those you get out of cans… o.o; Like the smell. I have no idea, but I’ve had some before without the certain smell. Otherwise, same old.

My boyfriend had some sort of paté. I dunno, but it was rather tasty, even if I don’t really like that kind of stuff XD.

I don’t remember what the third option was… but I think my dad might have gotten it, and I forgot to take a picture of it.

Look at that thinly sliced Chicken! Twas some kind of mushroom sauce I think? I forget by now what exactly there was in the sauce XD. But yes, this was mine!

My boyfriend and my mom ordered salmon. It was actually quite yummy! I’m surprised because usually restaurant’s fish meals are less tasty than the Chicken/Pork/Beef stuff, unless they specialize in sea food. Perhaps that’s just my bad experiences at those large chain restaurants.

The last one is the pork. Twas my dad’s.

And the desserts!

My boyfriend ordered some sort of cake thing from the Winterlicious menu.

Mom got this one. Some kind of creme thing. XD

Mine was ice cream inside of some kind of pastry, and with a nutty chocolate sauce over it. Obviously, someone neglected to tell me twas nuts (or I didn’t notice on the menu). I hate nuts with a passion.

And that’s it!
